Life Lessons… From Making Coffee

“Frustration causes more mess than progress.”

Dear leader,

Sometimes there is a delayed reaction. Not anticipating, or accommodating, for that delay can result in quite the mess.

I have a habit of bashing my coffee machine’s porta-filter against the palm of my hand (while over the bin, of course)to release the pressed puck of grounds.

Sometimes it is so firmly pressed that it takes a few bashes.

On occasion, I get a little frustrated, I must admit, so I bash it harder and faster, only to have the grounds release from the filter in mid-upstroke.

This creates a coffee-grind catastrophe! The grounds now, of course, fly everywhere: hot, wet, and plentiful, showering the kitchen: up the wall, down the side of the fridge, over the floor – certainly not in the bin…

This, as you would expect, vexes me no end!

What really surprises me is that I have done this more than once.

Note to Self!

Well, there are two.

First, one needs to have patience with things that are struck, or not proceeding at the pace that one would like it.

Second, frustration, it evidently appears, has an awful habit of cancelling experience. You think I do not remember the last time this happened: I do!

I still, however, thump the wretched thing excessively to extricate the expended grounds so that I can get on with my next expresso.

Impatience leads to frustration – the two are extricably related.

Neither are good for achieving the desired goal, and both, if not curbed, can end up causing more mess than progress.
