6 Steps 4 Leading Safely

"If you value safety, act safely!"

Safety begins with you! The best systems & risk assessments are only as good as the attitude and behaviour of those who use them.

Whether Director, Team Leader, Supervisor or Operative; in an “office”, a van, or on a site, we all have a responsibility to ensure that we, our colleagues, and those around us, are safe while at work.

Here are 6 steps for leading safely:

Lead from whatever position you have: You do not need to be at the top to lead from the front. Leadership is an attitude, not a position: show the standard, set an example.

Make a decision to be safe: There are always opportunities to cut corners or take short cuts. Make the choice to do the right thing in a safe way!

Make a plan: Make sure you have what you need and know how to use it correctly. Decide, organise and plan are the first three steps of a Safe Scheme of Work (SSOW). Planning & preparation is key: as the saying goes: “If you fail to prepare: prepare to fail!”

Target Training: Improve your skill-set. Knowledge is powerful, but proper application of that power requires wisdom. Knowledge, wisdom & experience provides the core of competence, so use your knowledge effectively.

Seek Guidance: Know your limitations. Do not be too proud, or afraid, to ask for help. If you don’t know how, do not guess! Seek help – even if it takes time. As the saying goes: “Better to lose a minute of your life than your life in a minute!”

Review Regularly: Measuring, monitoring and auditing are the last three steps of a strong SSOW. Adopt a reflective attitude with an awareness to recognise mistakes and an acceptance to review practice. Reward the good, revise the bad and take the lead to safety!

         THE RAM SPEAKS

“A good RAM should state the need     for ‘competent’ workers. Competence                requires taking the lead in                  communication, control & conduct.”
